The following information was provided to Steven Dixon at
Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home to prepare an
obituary, which was printed in the Marion Chronicle 13 Apr 2010.
Geraldine Lois “Jeri” (Hoggatt) Cardwell died 7:09 p.m. on April 9, 2010 at Marion General Hospital. She had been a patient at the Hospital since April 2nd. Friends will be received from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14th, at Owen-Weilert-Duncan Funeral Home, 2722 South Washington Street in Marion. Nephew Kent Hoggatt will officiate her service at 3:00 p.m.
Jeri was born November 16, 1918 in Herbst, Indiana to Wilbur Kemper “Dutch” and Esta Maud (Sprinkle) Hoggatt. Jeri lived most of her life in Grant County, Indiana, although she also lived for a while in Mishawaka IN. She graduated from Swayzee High School in 1936 and attended one year of college.
Jeri was baptized into Christ at the church of Christ in Normal, Indiana, where her parents and family worshipped. In more recent years, Jeri has been a member of the South Marion church of Christ.
Jeri began working at Anaconda in Marion on August 6, 1954. She rose to Head of Communications before her retirement on June 1, 1980.
On July 16, 1938, Jeri married Joseph Buren Cardwell in Grant County IN. After a divorce, they remarried on June 20, 1942. After another divorce, they were again remarried on November 1, 1976 in Marion, Grant County IN. Buren preceded her in death on February 25, 1995. She was also preceded in death by their son Larry Joe Cardwell, sisters Esther Beulah and Cathelene Ruth Hoggatt, and brothers Charles Lyndell, Merle Wendell, James Edward, and George A. Hoggatt.
Surviving her are son Edward Leon (Margie) Cardwell of Hemet California, sister Julia Catherine (Hoggatt) Gould of Marion, brother Aubrey Dean (Thelma) Hoggatt of LaGrange, and sister-in-law Dorothy (Johnson) Hoggatt of Searcy Arkansas. Also surviving her are ten grandchildren, seven (Edward’s guess) great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Her birth record from Grant County IN records misspells her name “Geralinde Louise Hoggatt”.
