312.     James Spurgeon Sr. was born 01 Jan 1698/1699 in Coverlyfields Dunstan Stepney, Middlesex, London. He died 1790 in Colerain Twp., Bedford Co. PA. James married Susannah on 1730 in Frederick Co. MD.

On 6 Feb 1718 at 4 AM, James Spurgeon, late of St. Mary Matfallon alias Whitechapel, County Middlesex, a laborer, burgled the house of Mary Fletcher, a spinster, of the following items: shag breeches, camel coat, camel waistcoat, fustian frock, fustian waistcoat, and five druggett coats. Spurgeon was held at Newgate Prison on 25 Feb 1718 for the crime. See Middlesex Sessions Roll MJ/SR/2324.

James Surgeon was sentenced to transportation in London, ENG, in Feb 1719 and transported on 11 May in "Margaret," Capt. William Greenwood with 44 persons aboard, to Maryland. There his indenture was sold that Sep to Richard Snowden, a merchant of Anne Arundel Co. See Peter Wilson Coldham, The "Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage 1614‑1775" (Baltimore: Gen. Pub. Co, Inc, 1988), p.754 and Harry Wright Newman,"Anne Arundel Gentry" (Westminster, MD: Family Line Publishing, 1990), p. 90 and PRO T53, Vol 27, p. 266.. His brother, William, suffered the same fate being sold in Aug 1719. An Ann Spurgeon of the same ship was sold to Rosanna Lees that same Sep. Her relationship, if any, is not known.

James Spurgin, probably the same as above, does not appear again until the 1733 tax list of Monocacy Hundred, Prince George Co. MD.; then on the Aug 1734 list of "those that had no tobacco bumt" according to law, in Monocacy Hundred. The Spurgeant settlement is marked on the crossing of the Potomac River on the Benjamin Winslow survey, dated about 1736. James Spurgin was a signer in May 1739, of a Prince George's Co. petition to establish a court at Salisbury Plain to hear cases, since various inhabitants of back parts lived some 120‑200 miles from the county seat. John Moore sold to James Spriggen, 16 Apr 1741, Prince George's Co. MD, 50 acres on the Potomac River near Teaggs Ferry, called "Spriggens Delight" part of Moore's "Antietam Bottom." John Moore sells additional parts of Antietam Bottom to William Spriggins, William Sheppard, John Vandever, and Israel Friend, per the rent rolls. James Spurgin is a signer of the 1742 list of petitioners seeking the creation of All Saint's Parish through a division of Prince Gcorge's Parish. Then there is a May 1749 Frederick Co. MD deed, John Barry to James Spurgin, "planter", for some hogs (B, 41‑42). In June 1749, Miles Foy deed to James Spurgin, a 120 acrc tract "Trimling" on a branch of Catoctin Creek. Spurgin paid an "alienation fine" on land per order of Benjamin Tasker, agent for the Lord Proprietor of MD (B, 48‑49). In a Nov 1749 deed, John Israel sells to James Spurgin, all his corn, hogs, and household goods (B, 94). James Spurgin was appointed to oversee the River Road and Richard Touchstone's Road, Nov Court 1749. He was a grand jury member during the March Court 1749‑50. In a Nov 1752 deed, Frances Foy sells her interest in a tract "Trimling" which James Spurgin already held (B, 671‑2). In Aug 1754, Spurgin

deeded 25 acres of Spriggens Delight to Nathaniel Forster (E, 524‑5) and to Margret and Thomas Forster, the other 25 acres (E, 526‑7). The 1755 Fry & Jefferson map again shows the "Spurgeant" settlement in Antietam Bottom ‑ perhaps copied from Winslow's earlier drawing. In Nov 1757, James Spurgen sells to Ulrick Erb, a 50 acre tract called "Stony Hall" [Hill?] (F, 342‑4). In Nov 1760, a deed is recorded for James Spurgens to Michael Baeghler of York Co PA, for a tract "Resurvey on Trembling" on Catoctin Creek, now being measured at 226 acres (F, 1198‑9). The resurvey, dated at Conochcague Manor 3 May 1751 and patented 10 Aug 1753 added 106 acres of contiguous vacancy to the plat. Frederick Co. tax records list James Spurgeon/Spurgin in 1753, 54, 55, 56, 59, 60, 61, 69, 70, 71, 72, 73, with tracts: Spurgeon's Choice, Antietam, Trenton (Trembling?), and Stony Hill. A patent dated 29 Sep 1763 was issued for Spurgeon's Choice on Town Creek in Frederick Co. MD, now Bedford Co. PA. Deeds recorded on this tract include: 50 acres to William Spurgin 9 Nov 1769 (M, 624‑5), 50 acres to James Spurgin Jr., 9 Nov 1769 (M, 636‑7), both Frederick Co. deeds; 50 acres to James Collins, 22 Aug 1786 (C, 280), Bedford Co. PA deed; with the rest by will, 50 acres to Samuel Spurgin, 100 acres to Ezekiel Spurgin. James Spurgin appears on Bedford Co. tax lists for 1772, 81, 83, 84 (50 acres, no livestock, cabin, 3 Persons, "old"). Will Book 2, p. 122, Bedford Co. PA, lists James Spurgin Sr., will made 24 Dec 1784, "being Striken in Years," made his mark, executors Samuel and Ezekiel Spurgin, "friend" George Elder; will proved I Jul 1790; recorded 1956 as below. Wife Susannah named in deeds; "Ann" interlined in the 1784 will. He and his wife were probably buried on their property in the old lames Cemetery.

The children of James and Susannah Spurgin were:

1. John, b. ca. 1732, died after 1788; wife Mary, perhaps a second wife, Mary Green; to Blooming Rose, Allegany Co. MD, and Monongalia Co, WN.
