20. William Harrison Sprinkle "Henry" was born 20 May 1834 in Meigs Twp., Adams Co. OH. He died 08 Dec 1908 in Meigs Twp., Adams Co. OH and was buried in Jacksonville Cemetery, Adams Co. OH. Henry married Harriet Gulda Mathias on 20 Sep 1855 in Hardin Co. / Adams Co. OH. William’s parents were David Sprinkle and Elizabeth Metz.

William was born and spend his entire life at Jacksonville, Meigs Twp., Adams County, Ohio, except for the time he was in the Army during the Civil War. He was a blacksmith. William became the town blacksmith after his fater moved to the vicinity of Rome, Green Twp., Adams County, Ohio. William lived in the home that had belonged to his father in Jacksonville. According to military records, William had blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion and was 5'10 1/2" tall. During the Civil War, William served in Company E, 117th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry (later than 1st Regiment, Ohio Heavy Artillery), from 1862 until 1865. He was the company blacksmith and artificer. He enlisted on 22 Aug 1862, at the age of 27. He was mustered into Company E of the 117th, along with the rest of his company, on 16 Sep 1862, at Camp Portsmouth, Ohio. On 02 May 1863, the War Department ordered the 117th to become the "First Heavy Artillery Ohio Volunteers". It was reorganized in this manner on 12 Aug 1863. William served in this unit as an artificer of Company E. He was mustered out with a large number of his fellow company members on 20 June 1865 in Knoxville TN. The 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery officially mustered out on 25 July 1865 in Knoxville TN.
His unit appears to have served much of the war doing guard duty and building fortifications to defend strategic cities. It also spent a lot of time in expeditions against rebel guerrilla bands. It spend much of 1862 and 1863 in Kentucky. It went on a few raids, but also built impressive fortifications in Covington and Newport, KY, which guarded the approach to Cincinnati OH. In 1864, the unit moved to Knoxville TN, where it guarded railroads and participated in raids against Saltville NC, under the commands of Burbridge and Stoneman. During late 1864 and 1865, it was made part of the 1st Brigade, 4th Division, Army of the Cumberland, and was sent to garrison towns in western VA and NC.
According to Professor James MacPherson, in his book "Battle Cry of Freedom", heavy artillery units were designed to defend strategic positions. They used big artillery pieces, which were not suitable for field operations. Therefore, these units did not participate in most famous battles, unless they were defending a city under seige, such as Vicksburg or Atlanta. Late in the war, many of the Union's heavy artillery units were converted into infantry units, so they could fight guerillas. The 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, which had been an infantry unit for almost a year before its conversion, also appears to have served in this infantry role as guards, guerilla fighters, and raiders.
